About your tour leader: Rabbi Joel Oseran serves as the World Union for Progressive Judaism's Vice President for International Development. In that role, Rabbi Oseran oversees many of the Progressive movement's educational and religious programs abroad and assists in establishing new Progressive communities worldwide.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1, Wednesday, November 9, 2016 - DEPARTURE

• We depart the United States on our overnight flight to Shanghai.

Day 2, Thursday November 10, 2016 - WELCOME TO SHANGHAI

• Upon our arrival in Shanghai, once known as the “Paris of the East”, we are met and transferred to our hotel for check-in and a free evening to relax and refresh.

Day 3, Friday November 11, 2016 - JEWISH SHANGHAI

• Breakfast at our hotel
• Today we tour and learn about the Jewish history of Shanghai, starting with Old Shanghai Town
• We visit the Jewish Hongkou Ghetto, the monument to the Holocaust, and the Ohel-Moishe Synagogue - this area became the home of approximately 20,000 refugees escaping from Central Europe during World War II, & Ohel Moishe now houses the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum.
• Lunch is included along the way.
• We walk through the former ghetto and visit a Chinese home where refugees once lived
• Tonight we meet with members of the Progressive Kehillat Shanghai Jewish community and join for Shabbat services and dinner.

Day 4, Saturday November 12, 2016 - MODERN SHANGHAI

• Breakfast at our hotel
• This morning we visit the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum where we see the Zhang Jiang Hi Tech Industry Zone's exhibit showing their recent achievements on the development of technology in Shanghai. We also have the opportunity to meet with an English-speaking businessman who will discuss working for an American company in China.
• Lunch is included along the way.
• This afternoon we have time to stop and see the Pearl Tower (on own). The tower has fifteen observatory levels including a revolving restaurant, exhibition facilities, and a shopping mall. The upper observation platform has an outside area with a glass floor
• The rest of the day is free - dinner on own.

Day 5, Sunday November 13, 2016 - SHANGHAI

• Breakfast at our hotel
• This morning we tour Shanghai. We begin at the Peace Hotel, built by Victor Sassoon
• Next we visit the world-famous Shanghai Museum at the center of People's Square, where we view beautiful examples of China's major arts, including bronze and jade works.
• Lunch is included along the way.
• We visit the Ohel-Rachel Synagogue, the most significant symbol of Jewish influence in Shanghai's history
• Remainder of the day is free for dinner on own.
• Tonight we catch our red-eye flight to Singapore

Day 6, Monday November 14, 2016 - WELCOME TO SINGAPORE

??? Upon landing, we have an early check-in at our hotel and have some time to rest
• This afternoon our tour includes the colorful streets of Little India, Chinatown and the Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple, and the “Peranakan Trail.”
• Tonight we embark on a bumboat ride along the bustling Singapore River, disembarking at Clarke Quay
• Free time for dinner on own

Day 7, Tuesday November 15, 2016 - JEWISH SINGAPORE

• Breakfast at our hotel
• This morning we have time to meet with local Progressive Jewish leaders at Singapore's United Hebrew Congregation.
• Enjoy lunch (on own) at Awafi Restaurant, the only kosher restaurant in town!
• This afternoon we visit with Rabbi Mordechai Abergel at the Maghain Aboth Synagogue. Constructed in 1878, this active Orthodox synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Southeast Asia.
• We drive past Synagogue Street on our way to visit the beautiful Chesed-El Synagogue
• Later this evening we head to the Raffles Hotel for a “Singapore Sling” cocktail at its historic Long Bar before having free time for dinner on own

Day 8, Wednesday November 16, 2016 - THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF SINGAPORE

• Breakfast at our hotel
• This morning we visit the beautiful Singapore Botanic Gardens
• This afternoon we visit the Esplanade in Marina Bay, drive along Elizabeth Walk waterfront, and ascend Mt. Faber for spectacular views
• This evening we continue to the Singapore Zoo for a unique Night Safari and Festive farewell Dinner at the Zoo's Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant.

Day 9, Thursday November 17, 2016 - DEPART FOR AUSTRALIA

• Breakfast at our hotel
• The morning is at leisure for last minute shopping, relaxation, or further exploration on our own
• This afternoon we catch our flight to Perth, Australia.
• Upon arrival we are met and transferred to our hotel

Day 10, Friday November 18, 2016 - UPJ CONVENTION

• Breakfast at our hotel. Today we start our convention with the Australian Union for Progressive Judaism (UPJ)!
